Healthier Choices For our Students
National School Lunch Program
The National School Lunch Program is a federally funded program that assists schools and other agencies in providing nutritious lunches to children at reasonable prices. In addition to financial assistance, the program provides donated commodity foods to help reduce lunch program costs. The United States Department of Agriculture (Outside Source) is responsible for overseeing the program nationally. In California, the program is administered by the California Department of Education, Nutrition Services Division.
We are pleased to announce that the Petaluma City Schools Food Services Program has joined the California Department of Education's "Shaping Health as Partners in Education" (SHAPE) California Program. SHAPE California is a network of school districts working together to improve the health and academic success of California's children, in recognition that actively engaging students in learning to make healthy food choices develops healthy habits for life.
The Nutrition Services Department provides nourishing meals to Petaluma City Schools’ students and staff, giving them the fuel they need to learn. Our menus are created by a Registered Dietitian.
The Support Healthy Active Kids in Education (SHAKE) program has become an integral part of the Petaluma City Schools District (PCS). Parent volunteers are working closely with the district administration and our educational staff to provide positive promotion of student health and fitness through physical activity and proper nutrition.
